About Us

The Sri Lankan Student Association of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SLSA) is a registered student organization established in October 2005. It serves as a cultural and social network open to all registered SIUC students, faculty, staff, and their families, providing an inclusive environment to support the well-being of its members.

Mission, Vision & Goals

Mission

To enlighten the university and surrounding community about Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan culture, provide a cohesive support network for peers of similar backgrounds, and warmly welcome and assist new Sri Lankan students during their transition to campus.

Vision

To foster strong athletic, cultural, social, and academic interaction and participation among members, while serving as a unified organizational voice for Sri Lankan students within the university system.

Goals

Coordinate engaging cultural and fundraising events to promote heritage; maintain an active digital presence and campus outreach through the Public Relations Officer; host mandatory monthly executive board meetings and regular general body assemblies; and manage organizational assets, member dues, and campus funding in strict compliance with SIUC and Student Development Office regulations.

President

Dushmantha is a Ph.D. student in Microbiology from Sri Lanka whose research focuses on engineering microbes for sustainable solutions to plastic waste. He enjoys collaborating with diverse communities, staying active through hiking and fitness, and sharing his culture through food, student events, berry picking, and experimenting with new recipes.

Vice President

Tharindu is a Civil Engineering student from Kandy, Sri Lanka, with interests in environmental research and sustainable solutions for water treatment and pollution. Outside academics, he enjoys working out, astronomy, photography, and films. He values cultural connections, building community, watching the night sky, and cricket as well.
